Wockhardt Hospitals, Rajkot achieves successful surgery for 58-Year-Old patient with Severe Valvular Heart Disease

A 58-year-old male patient presented with significant dyspnea on the least exertion and pedal edema persisting for several months. Upon clinical evaluation and diagnostic investigations, he was diagnosed with severe valvular heart disease. Given his poor cardiac function, he was considered a high-risk candidate for surgical intervention. His surgery has been done under the supervision of Dr. Chintan Mehta (Consultant-Cardio Vascular Thoracic & Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgeon).

Chintan Mehta (Consultant-Cardio Vascular Thoracic & Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgeon) said, “Despite the risks, the decision was made to proceed with double valve replacement (DVR), specifically mitral valve replacement (MVR) and aortic valve replacement (AVR). The surgery was performed with careful intraoperative management to minimize complications. The patient required only minimal inotropic support during the procedure, and there were no intraoperative complications, indicating a technically successful operation.”

Postoperatively, the patient showed remarkable recovery. He was extubated on the first day after surgery without the need for further inotropic support. On the second postoperative day, he was mobilized, and his chest drains were removed. By the fourth day, he was stable enough to be transferred from the intensive care unit to the general ward. On the fifth day post-surgery, the patient was discharged in a stable condition, marking a successful outcome.

This case highlights the effectiveness of comprehensive perioperative care in managing high-risk cardiac patients. The successful DVR in a patient with compromised heart function underscores the advancements in cardiac surgery and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in achieving favorable outcomes. The patient’s swift recovery and early discharge exemplify the potential for positive results even in high-risk surgical cases.
